| Water is one of
the natural resources that are essential for life.
So, its quality has a great influence on plant, animal
and man health.
The microbial pollution of water
gives origin to the appearance of infections or epidemics
that spoil the human health, there is t he sanitary
importance of the elimination and control of the severe
hydric infections like gastroenteritis, dysentery,
hepatitis, typhoid fever and giardiasis.
Chlorine, due to its capability
for destroying microbes, is one of the most used products
for water disinfection. However, chlorine is able
to react with the organic compounds present in water,
to produce substances that cause damages to the human
health because of its mutagenic and carcinogenic effects.
The use of ozone as disinfecting
agent is a way to guarantee water disinfection and
to avoid the production of those toxic substances.
Ozone is widely known and used for a quick and effective
inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms, since it
is a powerful oxidative agent and has a demonstrated
wide-range germicidal effect against bacteria, fungi,
viruses and parasites' cysts that affect both animals
and humans. Due to those properties, ozone is used
for water potabilization processes, swimming pools
treatment and industrial and domestic waste water
treatment, as well as for other uses or processes
where water with a very high microbiological quality
is necessary.
For over 20 years, the Ozone Research
Center of Cuba, has performed research and the applications
in the water treatment with ozone and produces the
ozone-generating equipment and technology employed
in different industries and high-reliability and efficiency
processes, such as, bottled water factories, SPF laboratory
animal breeding, operating rooms, swimming pools,
drugs and biotechnological products manufacture, drinking
water and high-risk waste water treatment.
At present, the Ozone Research
Center offers the following services:
- Consultancy
- Study of the problem and solution
proposals.
- Design, manufacture, assembly
and implementation of systems of treatment.
- Post-sale technical assistance.
On the other hand, the Ozone Research
Center offers an International Post-graduate course
on Applications of Ozone for Water Treatment taught
by high-level specialists and that makes possible
to obtain an appropriate knowledge of those systems
successfully used all over the world.
The Ozone Research Center of Cuba
has been present in the past 19 years in all the World
Congresses on Ozone with several papers on the use
of ozone for water treatment.
